Carpenter ants are the largest ants found in Southern Alberta, ranging from 1/8 to 1/2 inch long; the queens are slightly larger. They can cause serious structural damage to buildings. Since carpenter ants are mainly nocturnal you may not always see them, but may see signs such as their frass which is piles of wood particles that could contain bits of dirt, feces and dead insects. Carpenter ants enter buildings to nest or forage. They are called “carpenters” because they excavate their nests in wood, creating smooth tunnels and galleries. Their colonies are established after the mating flights of winged male and female reproductives. The nuptial flights usually begin during the first warm days of spring. After mating, the males die leaving the females to start a nest, often in a small cavity in a dead or live tree where she first lays her eggs. Mature colonies consist of a parent nest and satellite nests are established nearby whenever a need exists for more territory, resources, or a dryer, warmer nesting site for development of their larvae and pupae.
Treatment requires an integrated pest management program beginning with a thorough inspection. Finding different nests, and foraging trails is essential for full control. Nests and barrier treatments are done with residual liquids, dusts, bait and foam. Our full treatments come with a one-year guarantee.
